I’m loving how it’s the hdour-hunting itself that led to Cirl turning from spirit-talker into hdour (and also blowing up all the hunters). Backfire and a self-fulfilling prophecy, all in one neat package.
Yes! My intention was to create a bit of a perfect storm (lol) -- his teacher’s longing for lost glory, his own personal fear of death, and the persecution by the Heoling zealots, which created the conditions for his fall.
"Cirl stares down into the still pool of blood, and an unfamiliar figure is reflected back at him: Aristocratic Lygosi features and dark skin, with a glowing third eye of white light on his forehead, his face framed by a high-collared robe of sky-blue wool."
It is a good evocation of the concept, definitely. But it doesn’t communicate anything from the text -- the infinite branches above, the weird, dark, shadowy roots below, or Vahid’s smallness compared to it. So it doesn’t really accomplish a lot of the creative goals it has except for being the roughly right shape and colors.
So good! Enjoy your break and now that if you ever write a book I'll be right there at preorder!
Haha good to know! Publishing sounds like a real bear so I’ll probably just keep doing this. 😉

I've just binge-read the whole series to date and I loved it. You're doing a great job selling Stonetop, and a great job telling a compelling story.
It makes my week when I hear someone’s binged the story so far. 🥰 Glad you’re liking it!
I'm still fucking thinking about how good the blood scene retroactive cannon was 👨🏿🍳 🤌🏿

God damn it this is excellent cinema
> The Fate-Tree, as imagined by a so-so AI artist.
Ok but before I saw that comment I was like "holy shit this is an excellent rendition of a psychedelic magical tree."
